Last night, we had the pleasure of hosting the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN) Book Club's discussion on What is the What, by Dave Eggers. With nearly 30 folks in attendance, the discussion proved active and thoughtful. If you haven't read What is the What, be prepared for a very emotional read. (Read synopses and review). If you did read it, tell us what you thought of the book in the comments below.
To recap, before discussing the book, we were joined by Consuelo Amat, a guest speaker from the Bay Area chapter of Human Rights Watch. Her introduction provided historical insight into the first and second Sudanese civil wars and details regarding human rights violations in Sudan.
After an hour or so of book discussion, Greg Larson, associate director, The Valentino Achak Deng Foundation updated us on the current efforts of Valentino and Dave Eggers to build the first secondary school in Southern Sudan. Watch a video of their work.
The YNPN Book Club is an active group of young Bay Area professionals that meet bi-monthly to network, discuss books and share ideas and questions related to nonprofit managment, social change or related topics.
