Looking for a new book to read over the upcoming holidays?
Here's a shortlist of the newest 2008 titles acquired by the Foundation Center's San Francisco library:
- A Kaleidoscope of Prospect Development: The Shapes and Shades of Major Donor Prospecting, by Bobbie J. Strand: a guidebook explaining the principles of data mining and database screening in order to identify and track individuals of wealth. The author includes specific strategies for planning and organizing a prospect development effort.
- Philanthrocapitalism: How the Rich Can Save the World, by Mathew Bishop: the authors describe the spirit, potential and challenge of new philanthropy, whose proponents adopt successful business methods to promote social change. Profiled philanthopists include: Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Ted Turner, Pierre Omidyar, Jeff Skoll, George Soros and Eli Broad. Google and Wal-Mart are cited as examples of noteworthy initiatives of corporate philanthropy.
- Yours for the Asking: An Indispensable Guide to Fundraising and Management, by Reynold Levy: this book covers individual prospects, corporate and foundation fundraising, special events, direct mail, the role of volunteers, as well as numerous personal anecdotes.
